AFD Power Management

Purpose

In an effort to be environmentally responsible and provide energy savings for the university, the Vice President for AFD has directed ANTS to automate power settings on AFD computers. This effort complies with the CSU Executive Order 987 to reduce energy consumption by 15%.

How Energy Saving is Achieved

To provide these energy savings, ANTS uses management software to set timeouts to turn off the screen saver, turn off the monitor, and put the computer to sleep. The settings used by AFD provide substantial energy savings with minimal effect on your computing experience.

AFD computers will go to a power saving mode when left unattended. In this mode, it has decreased power consumption, and provides the university with energy savings. To wake it up, simply move the mouse or strike a key on the keyboard. It does take a few seconds for your computer to wake back up, just be a little patient. To help save even more power when a computer is in power saving mode ANTS is installing power saving plug strips. The plug strip senses when the computer goes into power saving mode and powers off connected peripherals (monitor, speakers, desk light). ANTS recommends that computers are powered off at the end of your work day. There is significant power savings between "power saving mode" and "power off mode".

AFD Power Management Policies

AFD has standard policies for managing power settings that apply to most workstations. Specific computers that have critical business needs may have different power policies than those listed here. Please contact ANTS for more information about these special policies.
