AFD users have a choice of three web browsers on most workstations: Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome. Google Chrome is ANTS' recommended web browser due to its stability, security, speed, and ease of use. A recent vulnerability in Internet Explorer prompted many users to switch. Even though this specific issue has been fixed, it is still a good opportunity to try out Google Chrome! These instructions will help you make the switch.
Starting Google Chrome
Open the Google Chrome green, yellow, red, and blue orb icon from the taskbar. If you do not see the icon:
Open the Start menu orb
- Open All Programs
- Open the Google Chrome folder then select Google Chrome. If the Google Chrome folder is missing, contact ANTS (6-2687) to have Chrome installed. Do NOT attempt to install it yourself as this will install the consumer and not the enterprise version.
Chrome will start, if you'd like to add the icon permanently to your taskbar, right click on the icon and select Pin this program to taskbar.
Import Your Settings From Internet Explorer or Firefox
You may import your history, favorites/bookmarks, saved passwords, and search engine settings from your other browsers.
Within Chrome, open the menu in the upper right, then choose Bookmarks and Import bookmarks and settings...
In the dialog that appears, choose which browser to import from, then choose the items to import and press Import.
If desired, check the box Always show the bookmarks bar and then press Done.
Continue to Use IE for Certain Job Tasks
There are a number of web applications that still require Internet Explorer for specific functions. These include:
- PeopleSoft for ImageNow Linking
- T2 Flex permit sales (In person, not ebusiness)
- Cashnet Cashiers
- UPD Dispatch Critical Applications
- AFD WTS
Our recommendation is to use IE for these, but to use Chrome for everything else. As always, please let us know if you have any questions!
