Loans That Can Be Consolidated

The student loan borrower may include all or a portion of the following federal loan types:

  • Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans, formerly Guaranteed Student Loans (GSL)
  • Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans
  • Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans
  • Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loans
  • Federal Supplemental Loans for Students (formerly Auxiliary Loans to Assist Students.ALAS and Student PLUS Loans
  • Federal Perkins Loans, formerly National Defense/National Direct Student Loans (NDSL). Note: may become unsubsidized upon consolidation. Check with the consolidation lender.
  • Health Professions Student Loans, including Loans for Disadvantaged Students
  • Health Education Assistance Loans
  • Federally Insured Student Loans
  • Federal PLUS (Parent) Loans
  • Direct PLUS (Parent) Loans
  • Federal PLUS (Graduate) Loans

The consolidation lender (Direct Lending, through the Department of Education) may permit a student loan borrower who has already consolidated to re-consolidate if:

  • The borrower is attempting to consolidate a prior consolidation loan with another eligible loan type (new consolidation loan will be subject to terms in place - including the possibility of a higher interest rate).
  • The borrower is not attempting to consolidate a prior consolidation loan that initially included a defaulted loan, and is now in default.
