Public Safety

UPD Award

The Public Safety Unit (Public Safety) proudly serves the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo, campus community. Cal Poly has a student, staff and faculty population of nearly 24,000 and hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors to campus each year. Public Safety is committed to enhancing the quality of life for our campus community and is primarily responsible for developing services, programs and objectives for maintaining a safe learning and living environment. To meet this goal, Public Safety focuses on many functions. First and foremost is a strong working relationship with the campus community. We recognize that we provide services to our community and support the idea that all relationships require a partnership.

A Message from the Chief

Welcome to the California Polytechnic State University Police Department Website. I want to thank you for taking your time to visit our site.

The Cal Poly University Police Department (UPD) is committed to offering quality law enforcement services to the campus community. The mission of the University Police Department is to promote a safe and secure learning environment by maintaining order, enforcing laws, and providing professional police, emergency management, parking, and access services. Our motto is "Protecting Our Future". The men and women of UPD do this by being deeply involved with the entire campus community. UPD realizes that campus policing is very different from county or municipal law enforcement and therefore offers services to the campus community not done by traditional law enforcement.

UPD strives to enhance the quality of life on campus to make it a better place to live, learn, work and experience all that Cal Poly has to offer. The Police Department cannot do this alone; it requires the commitment of every student, staff, and faculty member to work in partnership. Doing so allows us to enjoy a relatively low crime rate on campus. When you, the student, staff, supporter, alumni, or visitor, take a vested interest in the community you can have a noticeable effect on safety.

While exploring our website, please feel free to contact any of the employees and departments listed with any questions. UPD is here to serve you and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Sincerely,
George Hughes
Assistant Vice President & Chief of Police
