This content is designed to provide you with basic information for dealing with various emergencies you may encounter, such as fires, injured personnel, or building evacuations. These procedures were migrated from the former Cal Poly Maritime Academy emergency preparedness site for the Cal Poly Maritime Academy campus.
In an emergency, call 911. Follow directions from first responders, campus officials, and emergency notifications.

Shelter-in-Place
Shelter-in-place is a precaution used in an emergency aimed at keeping you safe while remaining indoors. Chemical, biological, or radiological contaminants may be released into the environment or Cal Poly Maritime Academy may encounter an active shooter incident or a criminal incident. Should any of these occur, you may be directed to shelter-in-place.
Why Shelter-in-Place
When authorities provide directions to shelter-in-place, they want everyone to take those steps now, where they are, and not drive or walk outdoors. If you are told to shelter-in-place, follow the instructions below.
How to Shelter-in-Place
At Cal Poly Maritime Academy:
- Close facility-bring everyone into a room-shut and lock the door.
- Take roll of all present-make list available when asked.
- Listen for announcement notification from Local Authorities.
- Ask everyone to shelter-in-place and not drive or walk outdoors.
- Unless there is an imminent threat, ask all to notify their emergency contact they are safe.
- In the event of possible explosion, close all shades, blinds, curtains.
- Use cell phones to notify parents of status.
- Use the school-wide emergency notification.
If Chemical/Hazardous Materials:
- Select interior room(s) with the few windows or vents.
- Close and lock all windows, exterior doors, and openings to the outside.
- Turn off all fans, heating and air conditioning systems.
- Avoid selecting a room with equipment like ventilation blowers or pipes.
- Bring everyone into the room. Shut and lock the door.
- Select a room with hard-wired telephone for emergency contacts.
- Seal all cracks around door(s) vents with duct tape or plastic if Hazardous Chemical.
- Stay where you are until you are told by Emergency Officials that all is safe or you are told to evacuate.

Immediate Protocol for Exposure to Human Blood, Body Fluids or Potential Infectious Agents
Precautions
Prompt evaluation is important if a person has been exposed (by needle stick, splash, or direct contact) to human blood, body fluids, or a laboratory-associated exposure to HIV.
FIRST
Wash the wound/area thoroughly with soap and water
Then
Seek advice immediately from one of the following areas:

- Kaiser Permanente: 707-651-1030
*You will receive over-the-phone advice from a Registered Nurse. Depending on the risk assessment, you may be advised to proceed to the nearest Hospital Emergency Department.
** Risk assessment may be conducted at the nearest Hospital Emergency Department or go directly to Cal Poly Maritime Academy Student Health Center for physician advice. You may be advised to receive prophylactic treatment.
