Frequently Asked Questions

How is my USPS mail processed?

United States Postal Service mail is received and processed by Canyon Post on a daily basis, Monday through Saturday. Items using a USPS service that does not require a signature and are small enough to fit in your mail box will be distributed to your mail box by 2 pm on the day it is received. Items using a USPS service that requires a signature, as well as items that are too large to fit into your mail box will be assigned a tracking number and an e-mail will be sent out that will inform you to pick up your item at the Canyon Post front desk. Please bring your photo ID and either your package's 'Warehouse Location' (located on the e-mail) or a copy of the e-mail in order to retrieve your item.

We strongly discourage using the 'Delivery Confirmation' service offered by the United States Postal Service. These items are scanned as delivered well before leaving the USPS sorting facility which in no way indicates correct delivery dates, times, or whether the item has ever reached campus. In addition, some items using the 'Delivery Confirmation' service never receive an actual delivery scan by the USPS. For these reasons, Distribution Services does not accept liability for items shipped using the 'Delivery Confirmation' service.

How do I retrieve an item that was sent to me using a courier service such as UPS?

All items shipped to you using a courier service (i.e. UPS, FedEx, DHL, California Overnight, etc.) are delivered directly to Canyon Post, Monday through Friday. On the day your item reaches Canyon Post, an e-mail will be sent to you informing you to pick up your item. Please bring a photo ID and either the package's 'Warehouse Location' (located on the e-mail) or a copy of the e-mail notification to the Canyon Post front desk in order to retrieve your item.

I've been expecting a package for a week and still don't have it, what do I do?

The first thing to do is find out if there's a tracking number and track it on-line to see if it has reached campus. If the item has not reached campus you will need to contact the shipper and/or courier service to locate your package. If the package has reached campus or you are unable to ascertain its progress, please e-mail any information (i.e. who shipped it, what courier service was used, how big is it, tracking number, etc.) you have to packagecenter@calpoly.edu and we will be happy to perform a search for your package.

If I have flowers sent to me using a local florist, how do I get them?

Flowers from local florists are delivered directly to Canyon Post. You will be notified via e-mail that your flowers are awaiting you. Please bring a valid photo ID and either the flower's 'Warehouse Location' (located on the e-mail) or a copy of the e-mail notification to the Canyon Post front desk to retrieve your flowers.

I am going to receive something via UPS that must be refrigerated. Will it go bad if I don't pick it up immediately?

Canyon Post is equipped with refrigeration in order to keep your items cool. We place a high priority on these items and, in addition to an e-mail, we will also attempt to call you to notify you of your refrigerated item. While we are able to refrigerate your item, please make plans to pick up your item as soon as possible as space is limited.

I need to ship something to a friend, how can I do that?

Shipments and shipping labels can be processed from any personal computer. Simply weigh your package in the Canyon Post Mail Center lobby, access the shipper of your choice (i.e. UPS.com, FEDEX.com, USPS.com) from your personal computer, process your shipment, tape the shipping label to your package, and drop off the package in the Parcel Drop Box located in the Canyon Post lobby. A scale, tape, scissors, and a selection of boxes are available in the Canyon Post lobby. Separate drop boxes for packages and letter mail are located in the Canyon Post Mail Center lobby for items that have been affixed with the necessary postage or shipping labels.

I have a pre-paid package that needs to be picked up by DHL, what should I do?

All courier services are forbidden from making deliveries or pick-ups from your Residence Hall room. All pre-paid outgoing items for courier services such as DHL, UPS, FedEx, etc. must be dropped off at the Canyon Post front desk during regular business hours or at the 24 hr lobby drop box for pick-up. Pick-ups are made daily at 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Can Canyon Post send me notifications using an e-mail address other than my Cal Poly e-mail account?

No, all e-mail notifications will be sent to your Cal Poly e-mail account. If you decide you want to read your mail at another account (e.g., AOL, Hotmail, etc.) you may have your Cal Poly email forwarded to you. For instructions, go to: http://servicedesk.calpoly.edu/content/computing_support/my_cp_support/email_del_add_updates.

I have medication that must be shipped to me. What can I do to ensure it gets to me safely and quickly?

First, make sure whoever sends it to you clearly marks the package as "medication" or "refrigerate immediately" if it requires such action. Canyon Post places a very high priority on medication and every effort will be made to contact you immediately via both e-mail and phone. While refrigeration is available, space is limited, so please make arrangements to pick up your item as soon as possible.
