Negotiation by Any Other Name

Negotiation by Any Other Name

We negotiate all the time, often multiple times a day. But we don't always realize we are doing it. Approaching daily interactions as informal negotiations and applying the tools of "interest-based negotiation" can bring greater success in these interactions and reduce conflict later. (Interest-based negotiation tools work in more formal negotiations as well.)

This interactive workshop will teach how to recognize the negotiation aspects of daily interactions and to achieve our interests without fear or "hardball" tactics. All levels of experience are invited to attend. The workshop will feature scenarios and roleplay in breakout sessions.

Topics include:

  • Identify negotiation-related interactions
  • Separate the people from the problem
  • Be firm on interests, flexible on solutions
  • Distinguish Options from Alternatives and leverage both
  • Make decision points and commitments clear

The Presenter:
University Ombuds Mark Patterson brings a wealth of experience to CSUCI on making agreements that "stick" and minimizing later conflict, including experience negotiating everything from treaty implementation issues with foreign government officials, to criminal and civil litigation issues, to bedtime with his five children. Mark also taught negotiations at the U.S. Air Force Academy and for contracting officials in the Department of Defense.
