About the Department

The Cal Poly Maritime Academy Police Department is a fully vested police department, recognized by the California Police Officers Standards of Training (POST), and empowered as a full-service state law enforcement agency pursuant to section 830.2(b) of the California Penal Code. Officers receive the same basic training as city and county peace officers throughout the state, along with additional training tailored to a campus environment.

The department handles patrol, investigation, crime prevention education, emergency preparedness, and related law enforcement duties 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Department Composition

  • 13 sworn police officers — first responders to campus emergencies.
  • 5 Port Security Guards (PSG) — non-sworn staff who respond to service calls, assist with security patrols, conduct educational programs, enforce parking regulations, and perform vehicle and foot patrols.

Dispatch and Interagency Support

The department partners with the Benicia Police Department for dispatch services — the first point of contact for emergencies, non-emergencies, and service requests. Dispatchers coordinate communications between officers and support staff, and coordinate emergency response with both on- and off-campus resources, including fire and medical services. The Communications Center is open 24 hours a day, year-round.

The department also maintains working relationships with all local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and has an interagency agreement with the Vallejo Police Department to provide emergency services to the campus.
