Control of Hazardous Energy

Control of Hazardous Energy (sometimes refered to as Lock Out Tag Out) is a program identifying the requirements for assessment and control of hazardous enegy for faculty, staff, student assistants, or identified contractors who clean, repair, service, set up, and/or adjust machines and equipment in which the unexpected energization or startup of the machines or equipment, or the release of stored energy could cause injury to employees. Stored energy is not lmited to electrical energy. Stored mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, and chemical energies are often overlooked.

Only authorized individuals are permitted to do this work. There are also requirements for affected personnel whose job requires them to operate or use a machine or equipment on which cleaning, repairing, servicing, setting-up or adjusting operations are being performed under lockout or tagout, or whose job requires the employee to work in an area in which such activities are being performed under lockout or tagout

The resources below are available to be used for training, reference, or integrated into departmental safety program documents.
