Boat Basin and Pier Expansion

Project Summary:

The Boat Basin & Pier Expansion (BB&PE) project will replace (aging/existing) in-water infrastructure with a new pier, two mooring dolphins, and an inner boat basin wave screen. Landside improvements include a new electrical switchyard, a security booth, and targeted enhancements to the existing marine yard.

These improvements are designed to support the arrival of the Training Ship Golden State (TSGS), the National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) that will become the new training ship for the Cal Poly Maritime Academy. Scheduled to arrive in 2027, TSGS will replace the Academy's 30-year-old training vessel and serve as a state-of-the-art floating classroom while also providing emergency response capabilities.

The BB&PE project will provide the essential waterfront infrastructure needed to safely home port and operate TSGS, supporting hands-on training for cadets across the Academy's maritime programs. The vessel is being provided to the Academy by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration (MARAD), which is also providing targeted funding for the infrastructure improvements required to accommodate the new ship.
