Nonindustrial Disability Insurance (NDI)

NDI is a fringe benefit that provides income for an eligible employee who is disabled from work due to a non-work related medical condition and who is suffering wage loss as a result.

You are eligible to apply for NDI if you are an active CalPERS/STRS member and:

Benefit payments begin after you have used all accrued sick leave (use of vacation is optional, but if you choose to use, entire vacation balance must be depleted/exhausted before NDI benefits begin).

Eligible employees may receive benefit payments up to 26 weeks (182 calendar days) for any one disability period, in an amount equal to one-half full pay, not to exceed the specified weekly amount determined by the employee’s bargaining contract detailed on the Nonindustrial Disability Insurance flyer.

State Disability Insurance (SDI) is not a Cal Poly State University benefit. Employees may have access to those benefits if they paid into SDI at a previous employer. To learn more, navigate to the Sate of California Employment Development Department (EDD) website here, State Disability Insurance Flyer.
