Nonindustrial Disability Insurance (NDI)
NDI is a fringe benefit that provides income for an eligible employee who is disabled from work due to a non-work related medical condition and who is suffering wage loss as a result.
You are eligible to apply for NDI if you are an active CalPERS/STRS member and:
- A full-time permanent or probationary employee; or
- A permanent part-time employee; or
- An employee appointed half-time or more for at least one year of service or one academic year.
Benefit payments begin after you have used all accrued sick leave (use of vacation is optional, but if you choose to use, entire vacation balance must be depleted/exhausted before NDI benefits begin).
Eligible employees may receive benefit payments up to 26 weeks (182 calendar days) for any one disability period, in an amount equal to one-half full pay, not to exceed the specified weekly amount determined by the employee’s bargaining contract detailed on the Nonindustrial Disability Insurance flyer.
State Disability Insurance (SDI) is not a Cal Poly State University benefit. Employees may have access to those benefits if they paid into SDI at a previous employer.
